Watch for the spirit of it, not for the facts. I'll give it a 6 out of a 10, mainly because the jist of the movie is well intentioned.
That being said however, the movie does have it's share of problems. I'd like to reiterate what others have said - it turns into a juicing commercial about halfway through. Juicing may have it's time and place, but as a regular diet it isn't a healthy thing to maintain. My other problem with this move is the lack of data and facts about the "independent studies" they keep talking about.
Sure, they present and bad-mouth the manufacturers studies all day long. But the supposed independent studies which counter all the manufacturers studies are talked about, but not presented or shown in any way. Where are they?
Because of this, the movie at times feels like a story you hear from your buddy how they heard from so-and-so about this or that. For example, the story about the Pilots being told by the "Pilot Association" that aspartame is to be avoided? In , the entire world knew what it was to be hungry. Millions of people went without enough to eat , with the most desperate now facing famine.
At the same time, isolation took on a new meaning, in which the lonely and most remote were deprived of human contact when they most needed it, while the many victims of Covid were starved of air.
For all of us, the human experience fell far short of satisfying even the most basic needs. The pandemic has provided a taste of a future at the limits of existence, where people are bereft, governments are stymied and economies wither.
But it has also fuelled an unprecedented global appetite for change to prevent this from becoming our long-term reality. For all the obstacles and challenges we face in the weeks and months ahead, I start with a tremendous sense of optimism and hope that the growling in our stomachs and the yearning in our hearts can become the collective roar of defiance, of determination and of revolution to make this year better than last, and the future brighter than the past.
It starts with food, the most primal form of sustenance. People with pre-existing non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease or diabetes are both at a greater risk of being infected and also have a worse prognosis—including a higher fatality rate. While a healthy diet promotes a strong immune system and protects against infection, almost one-third of people suffer from malnutrition in the form of undernutrition, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, or being overweight or obese.
To date, our understanding of food systems is incomplete. Most existing data focuses on agriculture—where the food chain begins. At the other end of that chain, individual choices and consumption patterns are fragmented.
We do not have a clear picture of the middle portion of the chain: what exactly is happening between the farm and the table? At the policy level, nature has not been considered as a form of capital. Consequently, legislation is not designed to prevent pollution and other forms of environmental degradation. And at the end of the chain, consumers may not know how food reaches their plates or be aware of the health and environmental consequences of their dietary choices.
Anticipating a global population of almost 10 billion by , is it conceivable that we can produce food that is sufficient, nutritious, affordable and environmentally sustainable for everyone? The greatest challenges we face are practical issues with practical, nature-based solutions. They are entirely within our control, but require radical, transformative change. The world already produces enough food to feed everyone on the planet. However, a third of this food is lost or wasted.
