Can i shoot slugs through a mossberg 500

Having a wide choke is often necessary for firing slugs. Next, you want to consider the barrel type. Does it have a rifled bore or a smooth bore? It makes a big difference. It is possible to fire a slug out of either but the results are going to be vastly different.

To understand why it is important to understand what the differences between a rifled and a smooth bore are. Here is a simple breakdown:. A rifled bore has a machined, almost spiraled, barrel. When the bullet is fired out of the gun it is caused to rapidly spin.

This spinning motion is vital for accuracy. The spins set the bullet on a very specific trajectory that it cant deviate from. Where you point the gun is where the bullet will go. It gets its accuracy from spread, not precision. Most shotguns come with a smooth bore, the barrel is entirely smooth on the inside so there is less friction with the round as it exits the barrel. It is also far easier and cheaper to manufacture a smooth bore barrel.

When firing a slug with a smooth bore the round essentially wobbles very quickly as it travels down the barrel. This means when it exits the muzzle of the gun it will be fired in the correct general direction but the true trajectory will be slightly more difficult to account for. There is a larger area within which the bullet might hit. The further the distance you are firing the bigger this area becomes.

Firing a slug over yards accurately with a smooth bore requires a lot more luck than skill. In theory, a slug should not damage your shotgun. A slug should fire just fine, without damaging your barrel, regardless of whether it has a rifled or smooth bore or what size choke you have.

The only way you might damage your barrel is if it has been over bored. Shotguns are truely the ultimate multipurpose hunting gun. There are a variety of styles to cause different patterns of shot. And it's shotGUN. Actually I think he was referring to the 'Duck Bill Attachment' that was found on shorguns in Vietnam.

The SEAL's were very fond of this devise on shotguns. I just unscew the modified choke on my express and use slugs in it. Too late guys. I used the rifled slugs and they work great!!

Really accurate at 50yds. It made a huge sized hole in a Folgers coffee can. Watermelon at 25 yards. Nuff said :D! Winchester Hollow Point Slugs.

You didn't say which different tubes you have. I'd try at least 3 shots, if not 5 shots, with each tube you have. I understand most smoothbores shoot best with a modified choke. Others here use slugs, but I think I've got you headed in the right direction. A rifled barrel will increase not only your accuracy, but your range as well because the rifles barrel is inherently more accurate. Comment Post Cancel. Any Open Choke works well with Slugs. Handsome looking Mossberg, I wouldn't choke him at all.

Best of all would be a rifled choke, to give a bit more accuracy, but otherwise results will usually be best with the most open choke eg cyl. Foster-style and Brenneke-style slugs are designed to work safely with any degree of choke, but tighter chokes tend to deform them more. As you may be aware, sabot type slugs are designed for rifled bores, not for use with a choked smoothbore.

Which type slugs were the most accurate in which barrel, broken out by gauge. I remember seeing it somewhere. Originally posted by franchi20 View Post. Originally posted by FirstBubba View Post. Right Rail 1. Top Active Users. Right Rail 2. Latest Topics.
